After an undefeated season, the Mumford Mustangs took to the highways and traveled to Austin to compete in the UIL State Basketball Championships. First up against the powerhouse Mustangs was the San Augestine Wolves. The Mustangs came out strong in the beginning scoring high and blocking everything that came close to their basket. San Ausgustine tried to pull ahead in the third period, but the Mustangs held their ground and kept their lead through the entire game. King looked as if he had x-ray vision, making perfect passes to teammates without even glancing their way. Hyson made every basket he attempted and Pompa let nothing through his defenses. The final score of 86-63 had everyone in the stands, including the sports commentators, cheering. On Saturday, March 9, the Mustangs took on Dallas’ Triple A Academy. Hyson and King kept scoring high throughout the game and the entire team took their shots at defense. Even though the Mustangs did not bring home the giant trophy, they brought back the respect of everyone who watched them play. Coach Sodek led his team through an impressive season that will not soon be forgotten.
