Walter Sandifer Armstrong, 89, of Wheelock, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013 at St. Joseph Regional Healthcare in Bryan.
A visitation is set for Wednesday, September 25, at 10:00 a.m. at Heartfield-Ritter Funeral Home in Hearne with a funeral service to follow in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Wheelock Cemetery with a Masonic graveside service. Funeral service will be officiated by Pastor Gary Westbrook. Pallbearers are Wayne Orange, Brian Orange, David Wayne Orange, Billy Dearmore, Bill Dearmore, and Louis Davis.
Walter served in the U.S. Army in WWII and in Korea. He was one of the first Command Sgt. Majors. He retired from the Army after 22 years of service.
He was a member of the Wheelock Methodist Church and a member of the Patrick Lodge of Franklin, with Masonic membership for over fifty years.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram B. and Maggie Hancock Armstrong; and brothers, Claude Armstrong Sr. and Tracy Armstrong.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Antoinette Armstrong; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Bill Dearmore, Nancy Johnson, Bonnie and Louis Davis; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Dean Armstrong; sister, Earline Bunn; 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; and numerous relatives and friends.
Arrangements are entrusted to Heartfield-Ritter Funeral Home.
