George Thomas Harris
George Thomas Harris, 78, of Midland, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013. He was born on November 30, 1935, in Eastland, Texas to Charles Bost and Gladys Marjorie (Johnson) Harris. George graduated from Eastland High School in 1954, attended Tarleton State College and finished with a Bachelor’s Degree from University of North Texas. He continued his studies until he received his Master’s Degree in Counseling.
George married Sarah Layn Jennings on April 21, 1962 at the First Baptist Church in Grapevine, Texas. He began his career in education at Alamo Junior High in 1959 and later joined the original staff at Robert E. Lee High School in 1961 as a math and physical science teacher. After receiving his Master’s Degree he became a student counselor. He served 15 years at San Jacinto Junior High and moved on as a senior counselor at Robert E. Lee High School. He spent his entire 35 year career in education with Midland ISD and retired in 1994.
He served his country in the Marine Reserves obtaining certification as a Biological and Chemical Specialist and Nuclear Biological Specialist. He was honorably discharged in March, 1964.
George was a faithful servant of First Baptist Church of Midland where he worked in the audio taping of services, made costumes for church productions, participated in the annual nativity presentation and led his Sunday School Class, the Daniel Department, in their ministry of providing support to our servicemen and women.
He was an Eagle Scout and was the 52nd individual to earn the Mountain Man Award at Philmont Scout Ranch. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed boating, hunting and fishing. He attended various youth basketball and youth football games, and was a member of the Midland Gem and Mineral Association where he served as a board member, teacher, and shop chairman. George was also a member of the Wood Carvers Association and specialized in carving hiking sticks.
George was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Sarah. He is survived by his brother, Dick Harris of Midland; daughters, Kathy Ivy of Cypress, Texas, and Suzette Moser and husband Jim of Brenham, Texas; and grandchildren, Sarah and Charlie Moser.
He leaves behind long-time friend and companion Connie Staton of Midland and he will be greatly missed by her family; children, Kyle and Leslie Kitto of Midland, David and Bonnie Bevens of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and grandchildren, Kayleigh and Kevin Kitto.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20 at First Baptist Church of Midland, 2104 West Louisiana Avenue, Midland, Texas.
