Top of the world in class 1A
The Mumford Mustangs got off to a running start toward defending their back-to-back district titles. On Tuesday they went to Normangee and came away with a hard fought 73-58 victory over the Panthers. The Mustangs received balanced scoring from the group of Aubrie King, LaKendric Hyson, Dion Mack and Seth Smitherman. The Panthers hung close for a while but the Mustangs opened up a double-digit lead by halftime and were never threatened from that point on. Coach Sodek’s crew proved that even on a good night for the opposition, they would be able to stand up to the test. With Braxton Haynes, James Morris, Frank Franco and Justin Shannon all playing well, this group of Mustangs, may be better than last season’s version.
On Friday, the Mustangs took on 3A Caldwell and came away with an easy 72-44 victory. Mumford jumped out early, led by the 20 point, 18 rebound effort of Lakendric Hyson. Aubrie King had 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists, as he nearly had another triple double in the game. Seth Smitherman’s 12, Justin Shannon’s 4, Dion Mack’s 8, and Frank Franco’s 2 rounded out the scoring effort for the Mustangs, who improved to 13-1 on the year.
Coach Sodek and the Mustangs will host their Cotton Christmas Classic at Mumford beginning the day after Christmas on the 26th through the 28th of December. They will open the tournament against Thrall.
