Mary Nell Washington Walker, 86 of Dallas passed away Friday January 17, 2014 at Dallas Methodist Hospital. Visitation was held from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday January 24, 2014 at Glenn Mack Funeral Home. A celebration of her life was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday January 25, 2014 at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, Hearne with Rev. James Crawford Eulogist. Interment was at Greater Riverside Cemetery.
Mary Nell Washington Walker was born on October 4, 1926 in Hearne, Texas. She was the oldest daughter of Carrie Washington Lacy and the granddaughter of Gus and Jennie Washington. Mary Nell received her formal education in Hearne ISD at Blackshear. Upon graduating from high school, Mary Nell moved to Dallas, Texas.
Mary Nell was married to James Cecil Walker of Mexia, Texas for 49 years. To this union no children were born. Although Mary Nell was not the biological mother of any children, she was the spiritual mother to her younger cousin, Marion Cecil Barnett, Sr., who is the namesake of Mary Nell and James Cecil.
Mary Nell worked for Tom Thumb Page in North Dallas for many years. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Hamilton Park for most of her adult life, serving in numerous capacities under her friend and founding pastor, Dr. J. Lee Foster.
Mary Nell was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Washington McKellar, husband, James C. Walker, mother, Carrie Lacy, step-father, Ernest Lacy, nephew, Byron McKellar, and niece, Bridgette McKellar.
Mary Nell leaves to mourn son, Pastor Marion Cecil Barnett, Sr. (Diane), niece, Bridgette McKellar of San Francisco, California, nephew, LaSalle McKellar, Jr. of New York, NY, of Dallas, TX, step-sister, Turea Lacy of Hearne, TX, step-brother, Sam Lacy of Houston, TX, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Her arrangements and care have been entrusted to Glenn Mack Funeral Home.
