District champion tennis team with softball close behind

Fresh off their championship in their own Franklin Lions Relays on last week, the Lady Lions Track Team, like everyone else around the State, took a test break.  STAAR testing took precedence over any athletic events.

That didn’t stop the Lady Lions from claiming another District Championship.  The Lady Lions Tennis Team won the District Championship this past weekend and advances to the Regionals at the Murphy Center at Tyler Junior College.  Remember Carrie Casey, well she took time off from Track to win the Singles Title, and Kaitlyn Mitchell and Alondra Torres combined to finish 2nd in the Doubles Championship. Also, one more Lady Lion advanced as Kaitlyn McCulley combined with fellow Lion Seth Kissinger, to finish 2nd in the Mixed Doubles Title.  Congratulations to the Lady Lions for a fantastic year, that just keeps getting better.

On the track, the Lady Lions are hoping to be able to put together a strong enough team that they can compete for the District, Area, Region, and possibly a State Championship.  With many of the young ladies pulling double duty and are also in the lead in the Softball district race, the Lady Lions must juggle their time as they compete in multiple sports.  Darby Hughes and Megan McCarver transitioned from winning a double header in Softball on Tuesday, against Centerville, to helping win the Lions Relays on the track Wednesday. As a matter of fact, McCarver pitched a no-hitter on Tuesday and along with Hughes, each ran a leg on the winning 4 x 400 meter relay team Wednesday.  The dedication and school spirit shown by them has been typical of the Franklin tradition.  No matter the sport the Lady Lions are going to participate and be very competitive doing it.

In softball, the Lady Lions had scheduled games against Anderson-Shiro and New Waverly this week and looked to keep their perfect slate in tact. They also will play a makeup game scheduled with Hempstead on Thursday.  The Lady Lions jumped all over Anderson Shiro early and kept the pressure on throughout in an easy 18-0 win on Tuesday.  Megan McCarver piked up her 4th win, struck out 12, and Franklin moved to 9-0 in district play. Kyla Walker went 4 for 5 with a triple; Maddie Nelson was 2 for 4 with a double and 5 RBI’s and Jessica Lopez went 2 for 7, with a double and 2 RBI’s.  They later defeated New Waverly 11-8, in a slugfest. The win keeps the Lady Lions record unblemished in district play.
The Lady Lions continued to roar, as they marched toward another District Championship on the season. The District Meet will be held Wednesday and Thursday in Franklin at Hedrick Field.  The Field events will be held Wednesday along with the running preliminaries. The running finals will be Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
