Fire devastates home

Flames could be seen from miles away as a two-story house on Old Hearne Rd. and River Ridge Rd. burned to the ground Thursday night, April 10. Fortunately, the family of 5 got out safely. The fire was reported to volunteer fire departments across the county just before 7 pm. Neighbors reported an explosion before flames erupted from the house. Units, many bringing tanker trucks full of water, responded within minutes—Hearne was first on the scene followed by the Blackjack and Wheelock VFD’s. Next Calvert and Bremond, along with one of the Brazos County precinct fire departments, were called to the scene. Fortunately, a hydrant was nearby so trucks were able to pour lots of fire unto the fire, which was already spreading to nearby lots.

Still, the fire was not extinguished until late Thursday night—after midnight-- and units returned the next day to put out hot spots.

The nurse’s office at Hearne Elementary School is taking up a collection for the Gomez-Torres family who lost just about everything in the fire. Anyone who wants to contribute can take money or household items to Hearne Elementary.
