Letters To The Editor 5/29/2014
On behalf of the People’s garden (a small group of volunteers) wanting fresh vegetables to be shared with the community and local food bank we have hit a few set backs. Texas weather this spring has played havoc on the growing plants; many cool nights have prohibited growth in tomatoes and squash. Windy days have dried out food plots. Plus someone has pulled up plants and carried them off. We will replant and move forward. Again, public is welcome to harvest, not to vandalize. Let’s take time to be a better person; we are not on earth very long and gardening is good for the soul.
In the meantime I would like to thank local merchants who have contributed plants for the gardens. Keith Jentsch from Hearne Ace Hardware generously donated tomatoes and pepper plants. Our local organic Gardner Bonnie Briggs of Barefoot Gardens on Hwy 79 always helpful and willing to help promote better garden practices. Thank you to City Manager Mr. Drake and Mayor Gomez as well as Mr. Nelson City Park Supervisor for bringing water to the gardens. The gardens are small insufficient to some, but to others it is a start of caring and understanding in our community. If interested in helping at the gardens call (979) 777-8639.
