The Robertson County Relay For Life Organization kicked off the 2014 campaign with a “5K GLOW RUN” at Franklin Ranch Park. The event held Saturday, July 19th, started at 9:30 p.m. and was a glowing success.

Approximately $700 was raised for the American Cancer Society by entry fees, the sale of glow sticks, T-shirts and donations.

The 31 participants enjoyed mild temperatures, a cool breeze and a beautiful sunset. Participants came from as far away as Austin and were 2 months old to 65 years young. The entire FBC Insurance office, including 2-month-old Aliana, ran or walked in support of Relay for Life. Rick and Cindy Dunlap from Buffalo, Texas came to run as part of the IRunFor movement, running for Kristine and Liliana,

The IRunFor movement is taking hold in the running community; runners choose someone with special needs, physical impairment, or infirmity that’s holding them back from running and they run in support of that person.

Two very inspiring locals also participated, Sally Merryman who is recovering from recent surgery and Glenn Dale Merryman who is a stroke survivor and completed the whole course in his famous bib overalls. Amanda Bush from Franklin, Texas took first place and Katie Hammond from Marquez, Texas won in second place.

The first place winner received a $50 Visa gift card, Tumbler cup donated by Sew Snazzy, and a cooking towel and the second place winner received a $25 Nike gift card, Tumbler cup donated by Sew Snazzy, and a cooking towel. After the run, participants were treated to fruit, water and sports drinks. Thanks to Nucor for donating the drinks. T-shirts are still available for a $20 donation.

Congratulations to the Relay for Life committee, Chairperson, Kayla Sanders, Rachael Choate, Jessica Van Cleave, Jessica Lutz, Delana Towns, Kara Baade and Cari Box, for such a successful first event. The committee would like to thank the members from Bryan Relay for Life who volunteered, sponsors, supporters, and runners for coming out to the kickoff event. Thanks to the Franklin Police Department and Robertson County Sheriff’s Office for providing lighting and safety along the trails.

The Relay for Life event this year will be October 18, 2014 from 2:00pm to 8:00pm at Franklin Ranch Park. Come join us to help “Finish the Fight” for the all the Superheroes in our lives.
