State Title game considered an instant classic

The Franklin Lions made their second state championship appearance in six years last Thursday in AT&T Stadium where they fell 35- 34 to the Canadian Wildcats in an instant classic. The Lions led 34- 28 with 1:02 left in the game after Seth Spiller connected with Braden Smith on a 37-yard halfback pass.

County tops 800 total COVID-19 cases

According to the report issued by the Robertson County Emergency Management Coordinator COVID-19, total cases have topped 805. The report is provided by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services and this is the only report provided from that state department.

Alica Anna Jurca Schroeder passed away peacefully on December 20, 2020 at the age of 93. She was born to Frances and Frank Jurca in Needville, Texas. She attended school in Needville and graduated from Richmond High School in 1945.

Joe Kenneth Withers, age 74, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, December 14, 2020 in Stockdale, TX. Joe was born to Joe D and Alma (Ansley) Withers in Teague, TX on September 18, 1946.

Robert Stellbauer, tax assessor-collector, reports that 78% of the registration cards mailed to voters for their signatures had been returned to his office in Franklin. Stellbauer’s office mailed out 6,900 cards to voters in 1970 for use in 1971 and 5,400 were in his office Tuesday morning.

To the People of Franklin, My wife and I recently made a trip from Jaspe to Austin to spend some time with our son and his family. Although we had a wonderful time and always enjoy the Austin area, we were ready fo a quiet night somewhere we’d never been before.

The year 2020 has seen a lot of inconveniences, hardships, and downright tragedies. One local tragedy that might have flown under the radar is the record number of children in foster care--double last year’s already high numbers.

The Comptroller’s office is working with food banks throughout the state to check the agency’s unclaimed property website for funds that could help fill their pantries during this holiday season. An initial check of some notable Texas food pantries shows that they’re owed thousands of dollars in unclaimed property.
