Big smiles in Hearne caught all day long

It is always a fun day when the pond at Eastside Park gets stocked with more than 150 large catfish and kids and their parents from all over Robertson County come out to the annual Hearne Fishing Derby.
The 5th annual Hearne Fishing Derby took place this last Sunday under a bright sunny sky that turned out kind of warm given the recent weather conditions that Robertson County residents have had to endure.
The break in the weather meant a day of catching fish for the well attended event. “On average I would say the fish are somewhere between 2 and 3 pounds, average weight,” said Paul Dorsett of Solitude Lake Management who along with the newspapers provided the fish again this year. “I would say we are just under 400 total pounds, and there are some really big fish this year.”
In fact the top weight on the year, just under 8 pounds at 7 pounds 14 ounces caught by an 11 year girl out of Bremond. From 10:00 am to 12 noon only the kids 18 and under are allowed to fish given them first crack at the big ones. Many of the kids fishing pulled in some sizable catfish including one 13 year old girl from Hearne with two 5 pound catfish back to back only to follow with a nice 7 pound fish.
