The Calvert Woman’s Club wants you to know

The first meeting of the Calvert Woman’s Club included a lovely luncheon hosted by Cyndi Bird at her home on Saturday, September 9, 2017. Accomplishments of last years’ club as well as new business were discussed and the events calendar was updated. The meeting was quite eventful with many topics on the table.

Annually, one of our priority goals is the scholarship we award to a qualified and deserving high school senior. At the end of the 2016-17 school year, ‘16-’17 club President, Mary Foyle Alston, awarded the scholarship to Alexandria Hogan at the Calvert High School graduation.

Alexandria earned a 3.219 Scholastic Average and was the honored Valedictorian of her class. Alexandria is currently attending Blinn College with plans to transfer to Texas A&M in the near future. In early October, scholarship applications will be available in Mrs. Salazar’s office at the school.

November 11, 2017 The Calvert Woman’s Club is proud to present the A&M Singing Cadets who will be returning to Calvert’s First Baptist Church. This is a male choral group made up of talented and wellpracticed Aggies that will be performing at the First Baptist Church in Calvert for the third year in a row. They have toured America and abroad and have earned world-wide recognition, including invitations to sing for American presidents. Their repertoire consists of a wide variety of music, something for just about everyone. Come and enjoy a delightful evening with this outstanding group! The performance begins at 5:30 p.m. and there is no charge for admission.

We thank you for your support of our community service projects and also for the opportunity to be caretakers of the Katy Hamman-Striker Library, which we have enjoyed for the past 77 years. A reminder to everyone that the library is open to the public the second Saturday of each month from 11:00 to 3:00 p.m. for checking out books, or maybe even learning more about the library’s rich history. Adult and children’s books are available.

December’s calendar includes readings of The Polar Express to children who come to the library on Saturday, December 2, 9, or 16. Plan to join us! More information will follow forthwith.

2017-2018 Officers are: Cyndi Bird, President; Donna McBee, Vice-President; Mary Foyle Alston, Treasurer; and Paula Ritter, Secretary/Reporter.
