John William “John Bill” Anderson
John William “John Bill” Anderson, 81, of Calvert, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016. Visitation was held Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with Funeral Services at 2:00 p.m., both at First Presbyterian Church in Calvert. Interment followed at Calvert City Cemetery. Services were officiated by Pastor Roger Garrett. Pallbearers were Clayton Moore, Jeff Mears, Bobby Samford, David Boring, Willie Houston, and Donald Threadgill. John William Anderson was born May 14, 1935 in Calvert, Texas. He grew up and lived in Calvert all his life. John graduated from Calvert High School in 1952. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in Huntsville, Texas. After college, John came home and married the love of his life, Jean Closs, on December 21, 1958. They were married over 43 years until her passing on May 4, 2002. They had one daughter, Amanda, who John truly cherished. He so loved his grandson, John Petitt, who quickly became “Papa’s” little sidekick. John worked with the Texas Department of Transportation family for 35 years. He was elected to the Calvert City Council and served on the Council for over 20 years, as his father W.H. “Brick” Anderson did for 30 years. John retired from TXDOT in 1996 to pursue the Office of Robertson County Commissioner Pct. 1., another office his father “Brick” held for over 30 years. John was elected and served as County Commissioner until retiring in 2007 due to his illness. John was extremely active in the community he loved. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Calvert where he served as Church Elder. John was a member of Pierce Masonic Lodge #144 and served as District Deputy for the 24th Masonic District. John was recognized as Calvert’s Citizen of the Year in 1982. He was very active with the City Cemetery Association, Calvert County Club, and numerous other organizations. John is preceded in death by his loving parents; W.H. “Brick” Anderson and Maxine Cole Anderson, and his beloved wife; Jean Closs Anderson. John is survived by his daughter and son in law; Amanda and Keith Petitt of Calvert, grandson; John Weldon Petitt, his sister; Mary Jo Walters of Dallas, his niece and nephews; Amy White, Kurt and Will Walters and many other relatives and friends. Arrangements were entrusted to Heartfield-Ritter Funeral Home in Hearne.
