Eagles look to continue success
Hearne Eagles vs. Franklin Lions on Friday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m. in Hearne.
The 2017 football season comes with higher expectations of the Hearne Eagles than any of their teams in the past four seasons.
Not only are they predicted to have a winning season but the Eagles are picked to finish 2nd in district and to contend for the district championship.
They will get a chance to test their progress on Friday when they entertain county rival 3A Division I power, the Franklin Lions. The Lions are just two years removed from a State Finals appearance and are ranked in the top 20 in the State again in 2017.
The Eagles defense will have their hands full trying to contain the Lions veer offense.
One advantage for the Eagles could be playing at home and the fact that the Lions are breaking in a new quarterback for their veer attack. Junior Colton Ortner will get the start but he will have plenty of veterans running behind him including Clayton Rosprim, Jared Pedraza, Datron Dixon, Nick Lopez, and RaShawn Green. The Lions will also put pressure on the Eagles offense with a defense led by tackle Casey Phillips.
Coach Sargent probably sees this game as a good measuring stick for where his program is at this time.
Behind quarterback Josiah Green, the Eagles hope to continue the progress they have made over the past season. He will have plenty of help in backs KeAndre Foley and Damien Dunn along with receiver Cedrion Golden. The Eagles offense has the potential to be explosive with plenty of big plays. They have the speed to really test the Franklin defense and offense.
Against the Crawford Pirates the Eagles did more than hold their own, defeating Crawford 4-2 in the scrimmage. All of the Eagles played especially hard against a very good team in the Pirates. It was a big first step to what the Eagles hope will be a very productive season.
The two-scrimmage games will help the Eagles prepare for a tough district race that comes later in the season.
