Antonio “Tony” Martinez Barrera

Antonio “Tony” Martinez Barrera was born July 14, 1937 in Hearne, Texas. He passed away July 27, 2018 at his home in Hearne surrounded by his loving family. Tony was a lifelong resident of Hearne. He was a machine operator at Hearne Steel Company for 48 years and served as vice president and treasurer of the St. Mary’s Cemetery Committee for 12 years. He enjoyed sitting outside at his home, visiting with friends, and being part of the Hearne community. Many will remember Tony as being good for a story, a laugh, and a cold drink on a hot day. Rosary was held Wednesday, August 1, at 7:00 p.m. and funeral mass on Thursday, August 2, at 10:00 a.m. both at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Services were officiated by Reverend Ramon Frayna. Interment followed in St. Jose Cemetery. A meal was prepared by friends and family and served at St. Mary’s Fellowship Hall where all gathered to visit and share stories. Pallbearers were Jason Barrera, Zachary Alvarado, Fernando Garcia, Matthew Barrera, Rylan Barrera, Tommy Barrera, and Tim Barrera. Honorary Pallbearers were Harry Alvarez, Larry Hurst, and all remaining grandsons. Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Tomasa “Tommie” Barrera of Hearne; sons and their wives, Jesse and Mary Barrera of Bryan, Peter and Sara Barrera of Hearne, Matthew Barrera and Christi of College Station; son, Timothy Barrera of Hearne; daughters and their husbands, Angelina and Raymond Alvarado of Bryan, Mary and Jerry Garcia of Caldwell, Dorothy and Gregorio Basulto of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Catharena and Lance Rydell of Taylor, Sharanda and Warren Mayes of Hearne; a brother, Louis Barrera of Pasadena, Texas; 20 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Preceding Tony in death are his parents, Jesus Barrera and Josephine Martinez Barrera; son, Andrew “Andy” Barrera; and grandson, Gunnar Rydell; brothers, Serefino Barrera, Cristino Benitez, Phillip Barrera, Cruz Barrera, and Pete Barrera; and a sister, Anna Dena Barrera. Although he will be missed, family and friends are comforted by the belief that he is with God and they will meet again. Arrangements were entrusted to Heartfield- Ritter Funeral Home
