John Velasquez, 81, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 while at Baylor Scott and White hospital, with his loving family by his side. John Velasquez was born May 6, 1936 in Calvert, Texas to Manuel and Julia Velasquez. He went to Calvert High School and attended Blinn College on a football scholarship. After attending college John entered the Army and was stationed in Germany. After completing his military service he began working for Southern Pacific Railroad, which later became Union Pacific Railroad. After working for the railroad a short time he decided he wanted to become a railroad engineer, which he accomplished. His engineering expertise was his professional love and he shared many of his rail experiences with his family and friends. He married Marilyn Baker in June of 1996, and lived in San Antonio, Texas and remained there with her through his retirement. His beloved Marilyn died in 2014. After her death he moved to Bryan, Texas to be close to his family and his hometown of Calvert, Texas. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Manuel and Julia Velasquez, sisters, Louisa Velasquez and Beatrice Lasater and brothers, Raymond and Wiley Velasquez. He is survived by sisters, Vicki Griffin of Corsicana, Texas, Nellie and husband, Bill Sparkman of College Station, Texas, Julia and husband, Jarold Cockroft of Fontana, California, Frances and husband, Dante Castillo of Bryan, Texas, Mary and husband, Bobby Boggan of Hearne Texas, Josephine and husband, John Florida of Hearne, Texas and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were held from 3:00 p.m until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, Hearne, Texas. The memorial for John was held on Monday, March 19, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., at Memorial Funeral Home, Hearne, Texas.All arrangements were entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home.
