Lewis Frank Varvel Jr., D.D.S.
Lewis Frank Varvel Jr., D.D.S., of Hearne, Texas, passed from this life to the next on April 14, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
Lewis was born in Austin, Texas, on Jan. 9, 1924, to Lewis Frank Sr. and Lucy Maud (Forbis) Varvel.
His early years were spent in Ridge, Texas, with a brief stint in Glendale, California. He graduated from high school in Franklin, Texas, in June 1941, and he enlisted in the Navy immediately after graduating. He served on the U.S.S. Hornet in WWII from the time she was commissioned until she was sunk. The Hornet was the aircraft carrier that took the Doolittle Raiders across the Pacific to Japan.
After the war, Lewis attended The University of Texas and was then accepted into The University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston, Texas, in 1950. Before moving to Houston, he married the love of his life, Ruby Vernell Otto, in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 2, 1950.
After completing his education, Lewis and Ruby moved to Hearne, Texas, to begin a dental practice, where they served the community they loved for over three decades.
They had two children, Lewis Frank III (Tracy) and Theresa Amanda Varvel. Lewis attended the Hearne Church of Christ along with his family.
One trademark of Lewis was his love of the land and his value of hard work. This was manifested through ranching lands in Franklin and Llano, Texas. Most of his free time was spent working his land and cattle. This was not a solo endeavor but a family affair.
Lewis is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Frank Varvel Sr. and Lucy Maud Varvel; and his siblings, Doris, Gertrude, Dennis, Kenneth, and David Varvel.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Varvel; son, Tracy and wife, Ann Varvel; daughter, Theresa and husband, John Newton; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren, Trent and Amanda Varvel and their children, Tristian and Thatcher, Kyle and Liz Varvel and their children, Emory and Brenna, Adam and Christi Varvel, Heath and Katie Newton and their children, Joel and Ruby, Heather and Micah Reeves, and Holt Newton.
