Lionel Curry Walschak
Lionel Curry Walschak of Hearne, Texas, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020, after a long hard battle with cancer. He was born on October 4, 1961, in Roma, Texas, to Lionel A. and Julieta Walschak of Rio Grande City, Texas.
He is survived by his beloved wife Melissa, daughters Alyssa (Leo) Gonzales, and Kaylee; sisters Melissa Anne Walschak and LeNelle (Nelson) Valdes. During his high school years, he participated in the RGC High School Rattlers Band.
He was a member of the FFA and won Grand and Reserve Champion Brahman Heifer at the Starr County Fair. Lionel was selected as an ambassador for the National FFA Band that toured Europe.
After high school, he went on to study at Texas A&I (now A&M) in Kingsville. Lionel was an assistant instructor of welding classes throughout college and received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education and minored in Animal Science on May 17, 1985.
He met the love of his life, Melissa, who was in his Freshman Algebra 105 class on August 28, 1980. They married July 25, 1981, and recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary.
Lionel was employed by the Soil Conservation Service, and his first assignment was in Franklin. In May 1985, he and Melissa moved to Hearne. Walschak Welding was established in May 1987.
If you look around Robertson County, you will see many of his legacies. Just to name a few, he built gates, fences, barns, ranch entrances, storage buildings, his shop, his home, and most of XTREME, his daughter’s cheer, and tumbling gym.
He even built the chapel where his funeral services will be and repaired the fence around the cemetery where he will be laid to rest. Lionel was a workaholic. He loved his career. It was not necessarily work; it was his passion.
He enjoyed welding, building things, working on the ranch with his cattle, and being a cotton farmer. His silly sense of humor demonstrated he knew how to have fun, too! Lionel was a loving husband and father and set a great example for his family and community.
