CALVERT — Calvert will look to regroup and continue building toward district competition after Jonesboro defeated the Trojans 52-7 Friday night at Calvert High School. The non-district loss dropped Calvert to 0-4 and extended its season-opening skid to four games. Jonesboro earned its first victory of the year and improved to 1-3 after entering the matchup with three losses. Playing at home for the first time this season, Calvert faced an experienced Jonesboro offense that has produced 181 points through four games. The Eagles controlled the contest and prevented the Trojans from establishing the consistency needed to remain within striking distance. Calvert’s touchdown raised its season total to 27 points. The Trojans have allowed 161 points during their difficult opening stretch, which has included three road games and one home appearance. Friday’s game also marked Calvert’s first meeting with Jonesboro this season. The Trojans remain winless, but their district record is untouched at 0-0. Calvert’s early schedule has been played entirely outside district competition, giving the team time to identify weaknesses and make adjustments before games carrying postseason implications begin. Jonesboro is ranked No. 167 in Texas and No. 57 in Division 1A Six-Man Division I. Calvert is ranked No. 243 in the state and No. 61 in Division 1A Six-Man Division II. The Eagles also hold the higher Texas High School Coaches Association regional ranking. Jonesboro will next face unbeaten Aquilla, which improved to 4-0 with a 60-6 victory over Kopperl. Calvert remains at home for another demanding non-district assignment against Abbott. The Trojans and Panthers are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Calvert High School. Abbott enters the matchup with a 3-1 record after defeating Heritage Christian of Rockwall 54-8 in its latest game. Abbott is ranked No. 27 in Texas and No. 14 in Division 1A Six-Man Division I. The Panthers are also ranked fifth in Region III and No. 19 in the Texas High School Coaches Association regional standings. The numbers illustrate the challenge awaiting Calvert. Abbott is averaging 62.5 points per game, while the Trojans are scoring 6.8. Calvert has averaged three points in the first quarter and 3.5 in the fourth quarter across its recorded games. For the Trojans, Friday provides another opportunity to develop against strong competition. Establishing longer possessions, limiting explosive plays and finishing drives will be important as Calvert searches for its first victory.
