Eagles Soar Into Playoffs as District’s Top Seed, Set for Showdown at Mumford

Dennis Phillips publisher@robconews.com Robertson County News The Hearne Eagles have put together a dominant district run and now sit alone at the top as the No. 1 seed heading into the postseason. A perfect 9-0 district record has secured Hearne the inside track, but one final regular-season test remains as the Eagles travel to Mumford on Feb. 13 for a 6 p.m. tipoff against the second-seeded Mustangs. Hearne enters the matchup riding a 10-game winning streak and carrying an overall record of 24-6. The Eagles have been consistent in nearly every setting, posting a 10-1 mark at home, a strong 6-1 record on the road, and an 8-4 showing at neutral sites. That balance has translated into one of the most productive offenses in the region, with Hearne scoring 1,987 points on the season while allowing 1,372. District play has been where Hearne has separated itself. The Eagles have outscored district opponents 691-366, averaging more than 66 points per game while holding teams to fewer than 41. Their district winning percentage stands at 1.000, a reflection of steady scoring, defensive pressure, and late-game execution. Mumford, sitting at 8-1 in district and 21-9 overall, remains the closest challenger. The Mustangs have been equally tough at home with a 9-0 record and have won four straight entering Thursday’s game. Mumford averages just over 51 points per game and has allowed 1,148 points on the season, numbers that place them among the district’s most efficient defensive teams. The Eagles have already handled the Mustangs twice this season, giving Hearne a 2-0 advantage in the head-to-head series. The first meeting came Dec. 13 at a neutral-site tournament, where Hearne controlled the tempo and earned a 44-24 win. The second matchup, a district contest on Jan. 20 in Hearne, was much tighter. The Eagles pulled out a 46-43 victory after a strong fourth quarter that flipped a one-point deficit into a three-point win. Statistically, Hearne has built its edge by wearing teams down over four quarters. The Eagles average 15.2 points in the first quarter and steadily increase production as games progress, peaking at 17.2 points per game in the fourth quarter. Mumford, by contrast, averages between 12 and 14 points per quarter, often relying on balance rather than late surges. Both teams have handled common opponents well, but Hearne again holds the edge with a 15-1 record against shared competition compared to Mumford’s 13-2. In district standings, the gap remains narrow in the loss column, yet Hearne’s undefeated league record ensures the top seed regardless of Thursday’s outcome. Behind Hearne and Mumford, the rest of the district has been competitive but inconsistent. Burton sits third at 5-5, followed by Snook at 4-5 and Iola at 4-6. Bremond and Somerville round out the standings, each facing uphill climbs late in the season. Thursday’s game at Mumford offers more than a rematch; it provides a postseason preview between the district’s two best teams. For Hearne, the goal is to close out district play unbeaten, maintain momentum, and reinforce its position as a playoff favorite. For Mumford, it is a chance to prove it can challenge the Eagles when it matters most. With playoff seeding locked in and both teams playing their best basketball, the final district showdown promises a high-intensity atmosphere and a measuring stick for what lies ahead in the postseason.

Hearne Youth Baseball and Softball gearing up for new season

Roy McCoy roy@robconews.com Robertson County News HEARNE — Hearne Youth Baseball and Softball is getting ready for a new season and sign-ups are now open. Organizers are asking families to get their kids registered before the February 15, 2026 deadline so everything can get rolling on time. The league is open to kids ages 4 through 14 and registration is done online at hearneyouthsports.com. There will be both baseball and softball again this year, and the program will be under new management, with folks working to make this season a good one for everyone involved. The goal is pretty simple. Give kids a place to learn the basics of the game, have some fun, and learn how to be part of a team. It’s about effort, sportsmanship and letting kids enjoy being on the field. Hearne Youth Baseball and Softball is also looking for community sponsors for the season. Anyone interested in helping out or sponsoring a team can reach out to Michael McCarver at playballhearne@gmail.com.
